Region

Kurtatsch - Margreid

Our winery's largest cultivation area is the zone of Kurtatsch - Margreid, which spans an impressive altitude range from 210 meters to 1,000 meters above sea level. This unique combination of altitude, diverse soil profiles, and individual microclimate enables us to determine the ideal location for each of our 12 grape varieties.

The warm daytime temperatures with intense sunlight reflect the Mediterranean climate, while the alpine influences are felt especially at night. The resulting significant temperature fluctuations between day and night are a guarantee of acidity, promote the development of aromas in the grapes, and thus ensure complexity, freshness, and minerality.
The winds, known as 'Ora', play an important role in ventilating the vineyards in the zone as they blow through the valley from Lake Garda in the evenings. Additionally, during the few rainy days of the year, they ensure quick drying, thus preserving the health of the grapes and preventing them from being affected by fungi.

soil profile

Foundation for uniqueness

The soil profile of  Kurtatsch - Margreid is diverse but can be roughly divided into three areas: The hillside vineyards north of the church in Kurtatsch grow on calcareous moraine deposits atop dolomite rock. Meanwhile, the southern area predominantly features sandy clay soils. In Margreid's valley floor, the vineyards thrive on sandy, calcareous alluvial soils that formed in the plain after the Austrian-Hungarian Empress Maria Theresa drained and reclaimed the originally swampy area.
